Give Snakes Some Space
Snakes need to stretch! In pet shops and other commercial premises, snakes are typically kept in conditions so cramped that they cannot stretch to their full length. Yet overwhelming scientific evidence shows that snakes, just like other animals, need to stretch their bodies for their wellbeing. However, unlike for other animals, there is no legal requirement for commercial businesses in England or Scotland to house snakes in enclosures that allow them to fully stretch. Imagine cats or dogs being confined in such small spaces! We believe that snakes deserve better. Government guidance for England originally included a provision, as a higher standard, to allow snakes to stretch to their full length. However, this requirement was deleted just prior to publication at the request of a pet trade representative. In contrast, the Welsh government took note of the scientific research and included in its Guidance the requirement for snakes to fully stretch. According to the Welsh Government, the rule has been broadly successful with high levels of compliance from animal selling establishments. As long as snakes are kept and displayed in cramped containers, not only will this cause widespread, unnecessary suffering but it will also set a very poor example of animal husbandry.
