How many exotic pets are kept in the UK?

The UK exotic pet population includes around 1,300,000 indoor birds; 900,000 tortoises and turtles; 800,000 lizards and 700,000 snakes. There are around 7 million indoor fish tanks and 6 million outdoor ponds¹. The number of exotic mammals kept as pets is unknown although it is estimated that there are between
1,000 and 7,500 primates in private ownership².
