Answers to common questions

Is it illegal in the UK to sell exotic animals trapped from the wild in other countries?

Most animal species can be taken from the wild in other countries and legally imported and traded in the UK. There are a few hundred species for which international trade in wild-caught animals is banned to conserve wild populations¹. However, the exotic pet trade in the UK and elsewhere is poorly regulated and enforcement is weak². For instance, it is not uncommon for exotic pet traders to mislead the public by wrongly describing their stock as captive-bred³.
